Supermarket chain Tesco is opening a new Express store in Gillingham.

The convenience store is set to take over the former Gabriela’s Restaurant in Napier Road.

The latest store opening is part of Tesco’s plan to launch 150 new Express stores in the next three years.

A licence application has been submitted by Tesco for the sale of alcohol from 6am until midnight daily, and the supply of hot food from 11pm until midnight.

Separately, Medway Council approved a planning application in October for alterations to the vacant restaurant.

Work will involve replacing the shopfront, installing an ATM, and creating a new 19-space car park and service yard.

The restaurant sits within a larger site at 40-52 Napier Road, which was sold earlier this year after being marketed by estate agent BWP Commercial Property.

Offers in the region of £1.75 million were invited for the 18,266 sq ft of disused commercial space, spread over five buildings including the restaurant and several warehouse units.

The new Gillingham branch is one of two Express stores set to open in Medway next year, with the other located in Corporation Street, Rochester, next to the railway station.

Tesco has not yet revealed an opening date for either branch.
