Work to modernise a 1960s council housing estate in Gillingham is set to begin.

Medway Council will be refurbishing three residential blocks in St Albans Close, near the A289 Pier Road, as part of a £2.5 million scheme.

Plans include replacing all windows, doors and glazing units, as well as installing new balustrades and associated repairs.

A new colour scheme on the glazing is also being introduced, replacing the current green colour with a light-blue palette.

Within a planning application for the works, a report said: “A property survey indicates that existing glazing is underperforming showing signs of physical damage and signalling failure in thermal insulation and solar control.

“A ‘like-for-like’ window and glazed units replacement maintains the existing outer materials, dimensions, pattern, and opening style, while a change in colour scheme aims to update the buildings’ outdated look by modernizing its appearance with minimal impact to its surroundings.”

Construction work is expected to begin in the spring, according to the council.

The scheme is being funded by its Housing Revenue Account (HRA), which owns and manages over 3,000 homes for local families in Medway.

The St Albans estate is made up of three blocks – Bowers House, Cheffins House and Snow House – built between 1966 and 1967.
