Tesco is set to open a new Express store in the centre of Rochester.

The supermarket chain is taking over a unit at the Pullman House development in Corporation Street, next to the railway station.

A planning application was submitted by Tesco Stores Ltd this month, requesting permission to install automatic sliding doors and plant louvres.

An opening date for the foodstore has not yet been confirmed.

Above the ground floor of Pullman House, a total of 64 homes are being created as a mix of one and two-bedroom flats.

The seven-storey building will also have 17 parking spaces for customers and a car club, but no allocated parking for residents.

The 3,600 sq ft unit, which Tesco has acquired, was being marketed by estate agent CBRE.

It had an asking price of £1.2 million for a 999-year lease, also known as a virtual freehold.

The development was first approved by Medway Council’s planning committee in 2019, and building work is expected to reach completion next year.

In April, Tesco revealed plans to open 70 stores across the UK over the next year as part of a major expansion.
