Medway Council has received plans to redevelop a former gasworks site in Gillingham.

Developer Blueberry Homes has applied for permission to build up to 500 flats and a supermarket on the SGN gasworks site in Pier Road, near The Strand.

The iconic gas holder, which has dominated the area for a century but is not listed, will be demolished as part of the plans.

If approved, the first phase will include a 1,925 sqm foodstore and road improvements, as well as a SGN training, office and depot facility.

A total of 123 car parking spaces will be created in the first phase.

It remains unknown which supermarket chain could move into the new unit, with Asda, Lidl and Tesco already operating branches nearby.

The application also seeks approval for the principle of the later phases, featuring up to 500 flats, a 140-bed care home, and a clubhouse for Segas Sailing Club.

Up to 327 car parking spaces and 578 cycle spaces are also included.

Of the homes proposed, zero will be marketed as affordable housing due to viability issues, according to planning documents.

Further applications would need to be submitted to confirm the exact layout, design and amount of development of the later phases.

Redevelopment plans for the gasworks site were first revealed by Future Medway in October last year.

The site has been used for gasworks since at least 1869, but gas production eventually ended in 1968.

A decision on the application is expected by Tuesday, 19 August 2025.
