Plans are being drawn up to redevelop Gillingham’s former gasworks.

The Southern Gas Network (SGN) depot at The Strand is earmarked for 500 homes, a supermarket and a 150-unit care home.

Kent-based developer Blueberry Developments Estates is behind the emerging project.

The development would also provide a smaller replacement depot for SGN with purpose-built offices and training facilities.

Other works include additional commercial space, road improvements and a new clubhouse for Segas Sailing Club, who are based within the site.

While details on the housing are unclear at this stage, the developer is proposing buildings of up to 17 storeys in height.

Once dominated by its landmark gas holders, the site, which is bordered by Gillingham Marina and Pier Road, has been gradually wound down in recent years.

The developer has requested a ‘screening opinion’ from Medway Council to determine if an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is required, before submitting a planning application.

An EIA gives planners information about potential effects on the environment.

The request was received by the council on Monday (21 October), and a decision is due by 11 November.

It is not yet known when a planning application will be put forward.
