Medway Council’s plans to build affordable homes in Petham Green, Gillingham, have been approved.

The development will include 19 homes for affordable rent on the site of the Lennox Wood care home.

The care home closed in 2009 and was destroyed by an arson attack in 2015, before it was later demolished for safety reasons.

A mix of terraced, semi-detached and detached properties will be built, providing 10 two-bed, seven three-bed, one four-bed and one six-bed houses.

Residents will have their own private garden, bin storage and cycle parking spaces.

A total of 40 car parking spaces for residents and visitors will also be created.

Last year Medway Council secured £363,137 towards the housing scheme from the government’s Brownfield Land Release Fund.

The funding will be used to support the demolition and preparation of the site.

The council has not yet confirmed when building work would begin.
