A neighbourhood in Chatham could be left without a Post Office after it was announced that the Morrisons Daily store it is based in may close.

The supermarket is planning to axe 100 convenience stores over the coming months, as it blamed government policy choices for rising costs.

Morrisons Daily in Luton Road is among those affected, after it was labelled “loss-making” despite efforts to improve its performance.

The closure means that unless a new Post Office site is found, residents could be forced to travel 1.2 miles to the nearest branches, located at Watling Street, Gillingham, and Military Road, Chatham.

Whilst a closure date for the current branch has not yet been confirmed, the Post Office has set out plans to help secure an alternative site in Luton.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We have been informed by Morrisons that following a review they are proposing to take the difficult decision to close the Morrisons Daily store where Luton Post Office is located.

“We fully recognise the inconvenience this will cause our customers who rely on our banking and parcel services in particular.”

The spokesperson added: “Should the decision be confirmed that the store is closing, the store and Post Office would close in the next few months.

“We will therefore be advertising the vacancy for the branch on our runapostoffice.co.uk website shortly and welcome applications from nearby retailers looking to host a Post Office inside their store.”

Luton’s Post Office had already moved from 50 Luton High Street to its current location at 214 Luton Road in 2021.

The branch was acquired by Morrisons a year later as part of a rescue deal with McColls.

The supermarket has around 1,700 Morrisons Daily convenience stores and opened more than 120 franchise stores last year.
