Medway’s largest rock climbing centre is opening this year.

Chimera Climbing is replacing Flip Out trampoline park in Chatham, near Dockside Outlet Centre.

The centre will cater for climbers aged five and above with any level of ability.

It will have around 1,000 square metres of climbing surface, including a variety of angled walls and an outdoor boulder garden.

‘State-of-the-art’ training facilities with campus boards, finger boards and a 40-degree wall will also feature inside the centre.

A range of lessons for adults and children aged five to 16, school holiday clubs and children’s parties will be offered.

The centre is also set to have a café, licenced bar and events throughout the year.

The two-storey unit occupied by Flip Out, which opened in 2016, was put up for rent last August.

A closing date for Flip Out is not yet known, but Chimera Climbing will be taking over the unit in February.

It will be the third and largest branch in Kent, with existing centres in Canterbury and Tunbridge Wells.

Around 15 jobs will be created, with a head coach already recruited and vacancies now being advertised for a manager and accounting assistant.

Roles for receptionists, café staff, coaches, route setters and a marketing officer will be advertised in the next few months.

Chris Searle, director at Chimera Climbing, said: “We cannot wait to open our third centre.

“The first two have been a huge success, we’ve introduced the sport to so many people, and really grown an incredible community.”

Andre Hedger, co-director at Chimera Climbing, said: “This wall will be our biggest yet, with the best bouldering in Kent.

“It’s a really exciting opportunity for the Medway community to learn a new sport, and for Chimera to continue our mission of introducing the world of climbing to a wider audience.”

An opening date for Chimera Climbing is expected later this year.
