A developer has submitted revised plans for a part of the former St John Fisher School site in Chatham.

The plans would create 11 flats in the existing Edwardian building and 12 flats in a new block to the rear of the plot in Maidstone Road.

Designs show the new block would be three storeys in height and each flat will have access to a private outdoor space.

Up to 20 car parking spaces will be provided in addition to a car club facility.

The same site was the subject of a planning application for 19 flats but it was refused by Medway Council last June.

At the time, the council said the plans would result in an over-development of the site and harm the surrounding conservation area.

Issues were also raised over the removal of historical features within the Edwardian building, which was built in 1901 to the designs of prolific local architect George Edward Bond.

Concerned about the plans, The Victorian Society called on the government to protect the Edwardian building by listing it.

However, its bid was rejected last July after Historic England said the building “does not confer sufficient special interest in the national context”.

It also found the interior had been “significantly altered through the removal of the central lobby and many of its decorative fixtures.”

The rest of the former school site, which borders with Scotteswood Avenue, is being redeveloped separately into an Aldi supermarket.

A decision on the plans is due by 19 June 2026.
