Residents asked for views on new Aldi supermarket in Maidstone Road, Chatham

Aldi is consulting residents on plans to build a second supermarket in Chatham.
The discount food retailer has unveiled designs for a new store on a part of the former St John Fisher School site in Maidstone Road.
The 1,300 sqm supermarket is earmarked to boost Chatham’s economy by up to £7 million.

The plans include a customer car park with 105 spaces, including seven accessible spaces and nine parent and child spaces.
This would be accessed via a new entrance point from Maidstone Road.
Up to 50 new, full-time jobs for local people will also be created.

The public consultation is now underway and will close on Sunday, 23 February.
Aldi will then submit a planning application with its finalised plans to Medway Council later this year.
A separate application, known as prior approval, has already been put forward for the demolition of existing buildings on the site and is currently being considered by the council.
If approved, demolition work will start on 17 March.

The site does not include the former school’s Edwardian building, which sold separately for £667,000 at an auction last November.
A statement from Aldi said: “The closest Aldi stores to the site are currently located in Horsted Retail Park and Gillingham, which are increasingly popular and busy.
“A new store at this site would improve the local retail offering and ensure that the local community has access to Aldi’s award-winning range of low-cost, high-quality products.”

I attended the consultation and quite frankly the people representing Aldi did not have a clue. When asked about this site vs Horsted in size they did not know. Stated they talked to local shop owners in area which they had not. Also told that as Commercial site cannot be turned into housing again another load of BS!!.
There are 2 bus stops near this site. With this and the traffic going in and out of the site will mean constant holds up for all. This has not been properly thought of. The council have probably given their approval to the demolition as there is asbestos on the site and they dont want to foot the bill for clearing this from site. It does not mean that Aldi have permission to build their store. That is a separate application.
Aldi should have purchased the old Go Direct site in Chatham. May have cost them more in money but every shop owner would have welcomed it as it would bring more trade to a deprived shopping area. Perhaps the Council have a car park in or near Chatham they could sell to Aldi for them to build their store. Gun Wharf?
And shut the one on the airport site ? Only 1 mile away ? Good idea might make it less congested
Maidstone Road is very congested and this will make more drivers take side roads, which will make the whole of Chatham grid locked.
Great idea will take the pressure off Aldi at Chatham Horsted Park plus give more local people to shop without getting in a car. It’s a win win with the added bonus of more local jobs. Well done Aldi
Another Aldi within a 2 mile radius is not ideal. Maidstone road already gets congested with traffic as it is . On match days at the Chatham FC that is located yards away, it will be a nightmare and an increase air pollution with the increased traffic. The small convenience stores located on Palmerston road will be affected and probably close.
I live at Palmerston Rd, I do not think that a store is what we need for our children, we need a leisure center.
All Medway towns have this facility except for Chatham. To all residents of Chatham please lobby the council doe this facility, sorry Aldi/ Lidli its not you we need at the moment.
Is it a surprise we have very over weight children? No, its simple common sense, we so not have the facilities for them to exercise, this store does not solve these problems.
