Major improvements to Chatham’s Brook Theatre will take longer than expected.

The iconic Grade II-listed theatre is earmarked for a multi-million-pound refurbishment.

It temporarily closed in April and was set to reopen in 2025.

However, Medway Council has now announced that it will reopen in autumn 2026 instead.

The project includes installing new staging, lighting and sound equipment and upgrading the rehearsal spaces, dance studios and dressing rooms.

Better offices and meeting spaces will also be created, while disabled access and toilets with washing facilities will be improved.

Surveys commissioned by the council showed that structural works are needed before the refurbishment can begin to ensure the building is safe, which is causing the delay.

Works taking place over the next 12 months include immediate repairs to heritage features, better ventilation and a new lift.

The wider revamp is being funded by £300,000 from the government’s Future High Streets Fund and £6.5 million from the Levelling Up Fund.

A further £14.7 million from the council was also agreed by councillors in July to deliver the structural works.

It is not yet known when the structural works will begin.
