A trail of 100 blue window plaques celebrating Chatham’s history is set to launch, with applications now open to the public.

Resident-led organisation Arches Local is inviting residents and businesses to help recognise local people, places and stories with heritage plaques on their windows.

Each plaque features a summary of the property’s history, such as its first known resident, and a QR code linking to an interactive map of the trail.

The initiative, called Untold Chatham, aims to spark interest in the town’s history and promote civic pride.

Individuals uncovered so far include South Africa-born Edward Kraatskow, a Royal Navy sailmaker, and Emily Waller, who ran a ‘shop’ in the sitting room of her Victorian terraced house.

One of the most remarkable discoveries so far is Reginald Thomas Peterson, who grew up in Thorold Road and served in the Royal Australian Navy.

He tragically lost his life during the Second World War after his ship, HMAS Yarra, came under attack by a Japanese fleet in the Indian Ocean.

Arches Local says a successful pilot trail has already seen 30 plaques put up in the Luton area.

A spokesperson said: “We’re excited to roll out a further 100 window plaques to give local people a chance to discover the hidden history of their property, free of charge.

“Our plaques are the size of a dinner plate and fully removable, making them suitable for both homeowners and renters.”

Properties must be located within the eligible boundary and have been built before 1925, with a ground floor window that can be easily seen from the pavement.

Residents and businesses interested in requesting a plaque are asked to complete the form provided by Arches Local.
