Poundland in Chatham High Street closes permanently after decades in town

Poundland in Chatham High Street has closed down after more than 20 years in the town.

The discount store shut its doors for the final time today (24 August).

Shoppers can instead visit the nearby branch in the Pentagon Centre, which remains open as usual.

It comes amid reports that Poundland’s owner, Gordon Brothers, is exploring a sale of the retailer just over a year after acquiring it for £1, Sky News understands.

The business faced near collapse before the takeover, shutting up to 200 stores as part of a restructuring process, including the branch in Gillingham’s Hempstead Valley.

It now trades from around 650 locations across the UK.

Future plans are not yet known for the now-closed Chatham High Street branch.
