A closed car park in Chatham will be transformed into 21 affordable homes after plans received the go-ahead.

Medway Council has approved plans to build 21 flats for affordable rent on the site of Upper Mount car park, off Old Road.

The scheme would see a three-storey block built, consisting of three one-bed, 15 two-bed, and three three-bed flats.

As part of the plans, each flat will have access to its own private amenity space and a communal garden, plus 21 car parking spaces will be provided.

The proposals were submitted by Medway Development Company (MDC), the council-owned housebuilder, last July after the car park closed permanently earlier that year.

It is expected that MDC will partner with not-for-profit housing association Outreach Housing to deliver the scheme.

A building contractor has already been appointed for the £6.5 million development, with Kent-based firm Perfect Homes Ltd securing the deal.

An exact timescale for construction will be known once the contract has been signed.

Last year, new retaining walls and utility services were installed on the site as part of enabling works funded by a £471,625 grant from the government’s Brownfield Land Release Fund.
