Medway Council plans to sell a further 14 of its own assets to ease financial pressures.

Among the latest round of properties set to be offloaded is the 544-space multi-storey car park in The Brook, Chatham.

Last October the cash-strapped council revealed an initial list of 30 properties poised to hit the market, in a bid to cut its costly maintenance spend on buildings and help reduce its budget shortfall.

Now the council has added more properties to the list for potential sale, such as Hopewell Business Centre and St George’s Centre in Chatham Maritime, currently used as council meeting chambers.

The list also includes car parks in Albatross Avenue in Strood, Cuckolds Green Road in Lower Stoke, Rochester High Street, and Britton Farm in Gillingham.

Other Medway properties may include public toilets in Rainham Shopping Centre, Cooling Village Hall, and The Street, High Halstow, but these will undergo further consultation.

The council says the additional 14 assets are worth £3.12 million, adding to the initial 30 properties valued at £34.2 million.

It is hoped the property sales will reduce the council’s debt and predicted overspend, which stands at £8.4 million in this financial year.

Schools, open spaces, parks and allotments are not being considered for sale as very little income would be gained, according to the council.

Councillors will discuss the latest proposals at the regeneration, culture and environment committee next Wednesday (26 February).

Recommendations from the committee will then be considered by full Cabinet on 11 March.
