Part of the former St John Fisher School in Chatham has changed hands for the second time this year.

The Edwardian building in Maidstone Road went under the hammer on Friday (1 November) through auctioneers Clive Emson.

It has been sold for just £667,000 but the identity of the buyer and their plans remain unknown.

The entire school site, including the main building, subject blocks and playing fields, were bought by investors Evan Chatham Ltd for £1.65 million only some months ago.

At the time a company director told Future Medway they intended to “do something with the site which is likely to need planning approval,” but had no concrete plans in place.

The investment group were approached for comment again but did not respond.

Built in 1901 to the designs of architect George Edward Bond, the building was originally a house for a Chatham councillor, Charles Bessent.

It then became a convent and later a school in 1964 until its closure in 2022.

But despite its impressive period features, such as stained glass windows and original doors, the building is not listed.

Inside the building there are 24 rooms spread across the basement to second floor, along with 14 car parking spaces to the front.

A description on the Clive Emson website states: “The attractive building boasts plenty of period features, a large and attractive entrance hall and the majority of rooms have high ceilings.

“It is believed the property was originally a residential dwelling and there may be potential for conversion back to a single house or, perhaps, subdivision into multiple units, subject to all necessary consents being obtainable.”
