A grocery store chain could open its first Medway branch at the multi-million-pound Chatham Waterfront development.

Budgens, which is owned by wholesale giant Booker Group, is earmarked to fill a major unit at the town centre scheme.

The 4,509 sq ft store would sell a wide variety of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as hot snacks, stationery, toiletries and drinks.

Medway Council, who is behind the development, confirmed it’s in talks with Budgens as a contract has not yet been signed.

The firm is set to occupy a ground floor unit in a block named Pioneer Wharf, located on the corner of Medway Street and Globe Lane.

Last week, Budgens submitted an application asking for permission to sell alcohol from the store between 6am and 1am seven days a week.

The news comes just weeks before building work at the Chatham Waterfront site finally reaches completion.

A total of 182 flats have been created across five blocks, as well as ground floor commercial units, public spaces and car parking.

Medway Council delivered the multi-million-pound scheme via its own housing firm, Medway Development Company (MDC).

Founded in 1872, Budgens is one of the oldest supermarket brands in the UK and operates over 260 stores today.

Currently the nearest branch is located in High Street, Snodland.
