A contractor is being sought for the redevelopment of Chatham’s Mountbatten House.

The 1970s office block, above the Pentagon Centre, is set to become 164 flats.

Medway Development Company – which is owned by Medway Council – has now put to tender a £35m contract.

The work involves converting the former office block into 108 flats for open market rent, plus a new side extension with 54 flats for sale.

Commercial spaces will also be created, while the disused Pentagon bus station will be turned into residents’ car parking.

The contract is expected to run from this September until August 2026.

Some work has already been completed at Mountbatten House, including asbestos removal, strip-out and initial groundworks.

However, spiralling costs has seen the rooftop restaurant and glass lift axed from the scheme.

Medway Council bought the 12-storey office block for nearly £2m in 2021, as part of its plans to regenerate Chatham town centre.

It has sat empty since 2008 after insurance firm Scottish Widows moved out.
